Stretching across the remote heart of South Australia, Lake Gairdner is a shimmering white expanse that captures both the harshness and the beauty of Australia’s interior. Irregular in shape and immense in scale, the lake spans approximately 160 kilometres in length and covers an area of around 4,300 square kilometres—making it Australia’s fourth largest salt lake.

Despite its size, Lake Gairdner is most often dry, its surface a blindingly white crust of salt that reflects the sky with mirror-like clarity after rain. In some places—especially towards the southern edge—the salt layer is more than a metre thick, a testament to the relentless evaporation under the fierce outback sun.
