Chanamee

Tanami Desert, Northern Territory

Stretching across the Northern Territory and into Western Australia, the Tanami Desert may appear desolate from a distance, but from above, its secrets slowly unfold. Scorched earth, salt lakes, and intricate patterns etched by time reveal a landscape of surprising vitality.

One of Australia’s most important biological refuges, the Tanami provides sanctuary to rare and endangered species — a last haven for wildlife that has disappeared from elsewhere. It’s a place where life has adapted to extremes, quietly enduring in one of the harshest environments on the continent.

The name “Tanami” is believed to derive from the Warlpiri word Chanamee, meaning “never die” — a poetic reference to the ancient rock holes scattered across the desert that never run dry. These hidden reservoirs have supported life for thousands of years, forming a vital part of Indigenous cultural knowledge and survival.
