Serpentine
Serpentine
Lake Pamamaroo, Menindee Lakes, New South Wales
From the air, the curve of Lake Pamamaroo twists like an ancient serpent, carved into a parched land aching for rain. This image, taken during the brutal 2019 drought, captures more than a landscape in crisis — it speaks to the lifeblood of a people and the delicate thread of survival that ties land, water, and culture together.
This is Barkandji Country. The Barka — known to many as the Darling River — is more than a waterway here. It is identity. It is kin. The Barkandji Wiimpatja (people) have lived along the Barka for millennia, their name and their stories bound to the river’s flow. The river gives life not only to humans but to ecosystems sprawling far beyond its banks.
And yet, the Barka is suffering.
Climate change, water mismanagement, and unsustainable farming practices have brought this once-thriving system to its knees. Fish kills, dry riverbeds, and dying red gums have become all too common — stark signs of a river being drained of its future.
The Barkandji people continue to fight, not just for water, but for recognition of the river’s rights. They urge all Australians to meet the Barka, to listen to it, and to stand for its protection.
“Serpentine – 3080” is both a record and a reminder. A record of a moment when the lake lay bare and exposed, and a reminder that if we want a better tomorrow, we must care for the veins that feed our country.
