110 kilometres south-east of Broken Hill, the Menindee Lakes is a series of shallow natural ephemeral lakes along the Darling River which have been developed into a water storage. When full they hold three and half times as much water as Sydney Harbour. Today the lakes supply water to Broken Hill, meet irrigation, stock and domestic needs of landholders between Menindee and Wentworth, and supplement the River Murray system.
