Earlier that day I’d flown over the Styx River at high tide. From above, the water was a murky brown, the textures hidden beneath the surface — not the kind of scene that draws you in. But I knew from experience that patience pays off. The tides (5-6 metres) would turn, and when they did, the landscape would transform.
Later that day, I returned at low tide. The change was astonishing. What had been flat and featureless hours before was now alive with pattern and texture — a vast mosaic of tidal flats, sculpted by water and light.
From the air, the scene became abstract. Channels wound like ink lines across the sand, and the colours shifted from silvery blues to soft golds and ochres. The patterns are never the same twice — every tide paints a different picture.
I’ve chosen to release only one unique artwork of this piece, to symbolise the singular moment this scene revealed itself.
